    The REACH directive for Ferroalloys

Our ferroalloys are delivered with REACH safety data sheets. What does this actually mean? What does it guarantee to the steelworks and foundries? We talked about this in this article.

The Reach certificate is a document that attests to the conformity of companies with a specific health and environmental protection directive. The precepts envisaged by the Reach directive can be applied to different industrial sectors and, on the ferroalloys market, supplying material including Reach safety data sheets has become synonymous of quality, reliability and trustworthiness of the supplier.

Here are some further details on what the Reach directive envisages and the advantages obtained by the steelworks and foundries that purchase ferroalloys with safety documents.

    What is the Reach directive

The Reach directive is a regulation adopted by the European Union to improve the work environment and the health of workers who come into contact with chemical substances.

It applies to every merchandise sector that envisages the use of chemical substances, from industry to goods of common use, such as the sectors of household appliances and household cleaning products, and this is why it affects the majority of European enterprises and the ferroalloys market is not excluded.

What does the Reach directive envisage for ferroalloys

The Reach directive envisages a code of conduct that companies are required to adopt concerning the use and disposal of chemical substances. Findings, it also recommends less dangerous substances that can be used as alternatives to those currently in use, in order to achieve the same results with a lower environmental impact and less risk to the health of workers.

Companies that adopt the Reach directive must trace the chemicals used, indicating how they are used and how they will be disposed of, and must communicate their procedures to ECHA, the body that supervises the application of the Reach directive, which attests to whether or not the materials can be considered safe for health aspects and the environment.

The advantages of having Reach certified ferroalloys

Purchasing ferroalloys with a Reach safety data sheet is equivalent to a guarantee of quality and safety for every steelworks or foundry.

First and foremost, Reach certified ferroalloys are supplied with all the documentation that attests to the chemical substances present and any possible risks; this puts the steelworks and foundries in a position to put in place suitable production processes and safeguard the health their workers.

Secondly, working with a supplier of Reach certified ferroalloys means being able to rely on a trustworthy company, which truly cares about the health of its workers and the environmental impact of its business, and which, year after year, is committed to finding less dangerous and higher performing solutions. In other words, a supplier of ferroalloys that one can depend on and with whom it is possible to establish lasting collaborations and mutual esteem.

  • Just-in-time ferroalloys: our logistic process

    Just-in-time ferroalloys: our logistic process

Ready to use ferroalloys without the need to create your own stock in-house. Discover our just-in-time delivery service and contact us for further details.

We have been operating in the iron and steel industry for over 30 years during which we have fine-tuned an efficient logistic process which allows us to guarantee consistent deliveries of ferroalloys to optimise the work procedures of our customers, to maintain low in-house stock without interrupting production plant operations. Below are further details on our just-in-time logistics for the supply of ferroalloys.

How the just-in-time logistics for ferroalloys actually works

Just-in-time logistics applied to the iron and steel industry, and in particular the supply of ferroalloys, envisages quarterly orders of materials which are not delivered immediately to the customer, but are stored in our 45,000 sqm warehouse.

Here the ferroalloys are inspected to guarantee their quality, they are screened and crushed if special sizes are required, packed in big bags if the service is requested and remain ready to despatch until the steelworks or foundry submit a delivery order.

    Deliveries of materials

The delivery of the ferroalloys to our customer facilities only takes place when the material is actually required. This can take place at scheduled time intervals, e.g. once a week, or upon request: with a simple phonecall the ready to use materials stored in our warehouse on behalf of a customer are ready to be despatched to the relevant production facility!

The advantages of just-in-time logistics for the iron and steel industry

Thanks to our logistics set-up, steelworks and foundries can always count on the stock in our warehouse, with the certainty of always having materials ready for delivery to their facilities.

This optimises the space and costs required to manage a warehouse at a customer’s facility and, at the same time, provides a guarantee for the delivery of the raw materials, because we are always ready to delivery the materials as soon as they are required for production.

Putting a just-in-time logistics system in place requires a dynamic and well-structured internal organisation, but in AL.FA Laminati we can also count on a team which is able to provide an impeccable service to customers and consistently punctual, or rather “just-in-time” deliveries.

Do you want to optimise your warehouse inventories without creating ferroalloy stocks for your production requirements?

We supply ferroalloys in the size which best suits your system. We can also prepare lots with customised sizes. View the details.

The demands of steelworks and foundries differ considerably and it is our duty to supply each of the same with the ferroalloys that best suit their manufacturing requirements. In addition to supplying materials made of several elements, such as silico manganese, ferro silicon, ferro aluminium, ferro manganese, ferro chromium, we also carry out the screening, sizing and packaging in big bags or  bags to supply every customer with products that are ready to use in their systems. Let’s get some further details on the ferroalloy sizes we can guarantee and how to request a customised ferroalloy size.

    Ferroalloy screening and sizing

Our ferroalloys are stored in a 45,000 sqm warehouse where they are controlled by independent certification bodies to guarantee the maximum quality of the raw materials.

The ferroalloys are then picked from the warehouse and moved to the screening machine which separates them, based on their size, to obtain stocks of materials divided by size and ready to deliver to steelworks and foundries.

The attention we pay to the ferroalloy sizing allows us to deliver our customers the materials best suited to their production capacity in accordance with their technical fact sheets, optimising the operating procedures and the entire supply chain of the steelworks and foundry which will use our ferroalloys.

    Standard ferroalloy sizing

Based on our experience, we have selected the most popular sizes used by sector steelworks and we have used them as the benchmark for the standard sizes of our ferroalloys:

    • from 0 to 1 mm
    • from 1 to 3 mm
    • from 3 to 10 mm
    • from 10 to 50 mm
    • from 20 to 80 mm
    • from 50 to 150 mm and higher

These sizes are always in stock and customers can simply contact our sales office to order an immediate delivery.

    Customised ferroalloy sizes

As we manage the screening and crushing phases in-house, we can process the ferroalloys by request until we obtain the size which best suits the production capacities of each customer.

Special ferroalloy sizes are available in minimum order quantities, but you can simply contact our sales office to check available stocks and order the size of raw materials that best suits the requirements of your system.

    Packaging

Our service includes packing in from 1 to 1.5 ton big bags and in from 20 to 25 kg bags to deliver to each customer a supply customised to suit production capacities.
